Choosing the Right Vintage Dress

Fashion designs have been around for many years. Some styles come and go, but one type of clothing that never changes is the vintage dress. They remain classics in their elegance and in their design.

However, if you decide to invest in one, it would be nice to purchase a dress style that you can wear more than once. Also, a dress you can wear to more than one type of event.

Look for a vintage dress that compliments your figure and suits your personality. Vintage dress styles in the 1920’s leaned more toward very thin women. In the 1950’s curves were in so the dress style leaned more toward curvaceous women. In the 1960’s, the vintage style was a little more eclectic, so the dresses would have to be studied quite well, for style and taste, before making a purchase.

One thing to remember is that vintage dresses were very well made. Today, dresses are put together using a much more mechanical technique. They are beautiful, but they don’t tend to hold up as well as a vintage dress.

In choosing the right vintage dress look it over thoroughly, to make sure that it does not show signs of wear and tear. Check the body of the dress, front, and back, the armpits, sleeves, the neckline, the seams, the dress hem, the zipper, or button, and look for signs of color fading. Also look for stretching around the breast, stomach, thigh, and hip areas of the vintage dress. If the dress is make out of cotton, there probably little to no stretching, but certain other fabrics can be stretched out of shape.

Check the condition of the fabric to make sure it is not worn or tattered. Certain natural fibers like, silk, wool, and cotton can deteriorate over time. Also, look for marks or stains on the vintage dress. Don’t panic if you see a stain, it might be a simple one that can be removed. Make sure all the button, snaps, belts, beading, lace or sequins are in place.

Pricing for a vintage dress can go from very expensive to inexpensive, it will depend greatly on where you shop.

If everything is in order and the vintage dress fits well, this kind of dress will last for a very long time. It will hold its value, if it is well maintained.
